The Home Run Derby seemed to be too much to handle for Luis Robert Jr.
The Chicago White Sox outfielder was ruled out of the 2023 MLB All-Star Game after injuring his right calf during Monday night’s homer competition.
As the only representative for the team in Seattle, Robert’s exit will leave the field White Sox-less in Tuesday night’s game at T-Mobile Park.
Robert, 25, reportedly had tightness in his right calf during the first round of the Derby after slugging 28 runs to oust the Orioles’ Adley Rutschman in bonus time and advance to the semifinals.
He got an MRI in Seattle and is now listed as day-to-day ahead of Chicago’s second-half start on Friday against Atlanta.
Robert was initially hesitant to enter the dinger tournament but was convinced by his pals and fellow participants Arozarena and Adolis Garica.
“Before the event, I hesitated about my abilities to be in this competition, especially with the experience I had in Cuba that wasn’t a good one,” Robert said.
“Definitely passing to the second round was the best moment of the night.”
The Rays’ Arozarena took down Robert 35-22 in the next round before eventually coming in second behind the Blue Jays’ Vladimir Guerrero Jr. for the 2023 title.
Still, Robert socked a total of 50 homers, including a 484-foot bomb.
“It was a good combination between my pitcher and myself,” he said. “Unfortunately, we didn’t have that same communication in the second round, but I think that was the key in the first round.”
Guerrero’s 25 home runs in the final round topped Arozarena’s 23 and secured him this year’s bragging rights.
He also became the first second-generation winner, following his dad’s 2007 title.
The White Sox are no doubt hoping it’s nothing serious for Robert, who has been dynamite for them this season.
His 26 homers are tied for third in the majors at the break.
Robert is hitting .271/.330/.569 with 51 RBIs and eight stolen bases as his squad sits in fourth place in the AL Central and eight games back of first place with a 38-54 record.
